Celebrate Nursing Informatics Awareness Day - May 12th!

Quote:
From: Nursing Informatics on behalf of Anderson, Christel
Subject: Celebrate NI Awareness Day May 12th!

Greetings NI Community!

Reflection on National Nurses Week (May 6th-12th)

National Nurses Week is celebrated each year to honor those women and men who have chosen the nursing profession as a career and to highlight the many and diverse ways that nurses contribute to the betterment of patient care. You may additionally know that nursing is the largest of the health care professions and there are more than 2.9 million registered nurses practicing in the United States.

Nurses share their talents in diverse settings and many choose to specialize their practice and expertise in highly defined areas or types of patient care. One of the newest, and rapidly growing of these nursing areas is Nursing Informatics. As envisioned by the International Medical Informatics Association – Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group, “Nursing informatics is the integration of nursing, its information, and information management with information processing and communication technology, to support the health of people world wide.” (Adopted August 1998, Seoul, Korea)

Now is the time to start your support by circulating the enclosed flyer noting that May 12th has been designated Nursing Informatics Day by ANA and HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community. It is no coincidence that May 12th was chosen for this day as it is the day of Florence Nightingale's birthday. Florence is probably the first noted nurse to gather, analyze and interpret data for meaningful improvements on care environments and how care was delivered to patients.

Please share the flyer linked below with any colleagues, nursing groups, or interested parties that have a desire to understand and learn more about this exciting and expanding area of our profession. Also please be sure to check out the newly redesigned HIMSS NI website, which has over 60+ tools for the nurse informaticist: www.himss.org/ni

Have a GREAT National Nurses Week!

Study Finds IT-enabled Homecare Could Saves Billions
Mar 28, 2008 - 5:27 AM - by rnformatics
From Healthcare Informatics:

Quote:
A new study from the Washington-based Deloitte Center for Health Solutions finds that better coordination of in-home medical treatment and technological advances could mean a potential $400 billion savings to the U.S. healthcare system.

The Deloitte study, “Connected Care: Technology Enabled Care at Home," promotes self-care and an electronically connected patient/physician relationship as the foundation of a new model of healthcare with more emphasis on prevention and the seamless coordination of medical treatment.

According to the study, applying in-home technologies via the connected care model would lead to increased medication adherence, a reduction in avoidable post-acute complications, and an improvement in self-care management of chronic conditions. The eventual net result, the study projects, could be an annual savings of 20 percent or more.

Google to Begin Storing Patients' Health Records
Feb 25, 2008 - 5:42 AM - by rnformatics
Slashdot is reporting on the Cleveland Clinic's testing of Google's health record archive technology:

Quote:
Google's health record archive is about to be tested with the assistance of the Cleveland Clinic. Thousands of patients (who must approve the transfer of information) will have access to everything from their medical histories to lab results through what Google considers a "logical extension" of their search engine. We discussed the planning of this system last year.

Quote:
"Each health profile, including information about prescriptions, allergies and medical histories, will be protected by a password that's also required to use other Google services such as e-mail and personalized search tools. The health venture also will provide more fodder for privacy watchdogs who believe Google already knows too much about the interests and habits of its users as its computers log their search requests and store their e-mail discussions. Prodded by the criticism, Google last year introduced a new system that purges people's search records after 18 months. In a show of its privacy commitment, Google also successfully rebuffed the U.S. Justice Department's demand to examine millions of its users' search requests in a court battle two years ago."
