According to a recently released study in the journal
Annals of Internal Medicine, the
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) delivers better chronic and preventive care than
private-sector health systems. However, the report also indicates that the VA still has*room for improvement.
The*VA’s advanced
electronic medical records system is designated as one reason for the superior care.
The study*found that 67 percent of VA patients with chronic conditions received care consistent with accepted
medical performance measures. Among the non-VA populations with similar conditions, 51 percent received the
recommended care. Not exactly earth-shattering results, but an improvement non-the-less.
The study was conducted by Rand Corporation in conjunction with
UCLA and the University of
Michigan. The full-text article is available online
