The American Medical Informatics Association and
the Joint
Clinical Decision Support Workgroup of the Healthcare
Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) have prepared a white paper focused on clinical decision support
systems. The report, entitled Clinical Decision Support in Electronic Prescribing: Recommendations and an Action
Plan, indicates that clinical decision support in electronic prescribing systems can improve patient care, but the
benefits of*these systems have not been achieved. The the report examines different aspects of the technology and
will hopefully help the government plan e-prescribing demonstration projects and help vendors improve their
products.
The report was commissioned by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and was
funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
