Today’s New York Times has a story on how text messaging could be used as an early warning system
for governments and first responders in an emergency situation. Unfortunately, there really was no established
warning system around the areas of where the tsunami occurred and, of course, supplying cellphones to people who live
in impoverished areas around the world presents a problem of a different sort. The next few weeks and months should
see the emergence of text messaging as a necessary communications system in times of emergencies.
