Post [medinformatics] Cerner Supports Regional Health Information Org

As the federal government pushes for regional health information organizations to be
established throughout the country, Cerner Corporation is stepping to the fore.
From the Business Journal of Kansas City:

Cerner*envisions a so-called RHIO (regional health information organziation) that extends from Springfield to
St. Joseph and from Columbia to Lawrence, four cities that, not coincidentally, are home to hospitals that use Cerner’s
health care information technology. It will be “the largest pilot out there,” said Jeff Townsend, the company’s chief
of staff.

For starters, providers and payers will share a limited amount of data about, for example, prescriptions, diagnoses
and lab results for individuals living in the region. Eventually, the data exchange may include everything from
treatment plans to health outcomes. RHIO is today’s buzzword in health care information technology, but the idea of
information-sharing among health care providers is not new.

”Years ago, the idea for community health information networks rolled out right behind the Internet,” said Lewis
Redd, national leader of Capgemini’s health practice.
