Description:The Director of Nursing Informatics is responsible for the coordination of all aspects of planning, design, development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of clinical information systems as they apply to nursing and clinical processes. The Director will also be responsible for keeping abreast with new innovations in technology and developing academic relationships.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Manages human resources effectively. Communicates staff and management performance expectations. Provides ongoing and annual personnel performance feedback and evaluation.
2. Provides leadership skills to accomplish Hospital and Nursing IT department goals. Uses a systematic process to effectively plan, implement, and evaluate departmental policies, procedures, Nursing IT Strategic Plan and new programs.
3. Responsible for the day to day operations and outputs of the Nursing Informatics department.
4. Manages process for system planning, development, design, analysis, implementation, upgrading, testing, maintenance and evaluation of clinical information systems. Plans for data collection, cataloguing of gathered information, documentation of processes and communication with members of IT and clinical services.
5. Responsible for implementing changes in both automated and manual components of the clinical information systems. Coordinates communication of changes with Nursing and IT management. Anticipates and responds appropriately to requests and concerns from users or others affected by the systems.
6. Responsible for maintaining components of the clinical information systems, including revisions, testing system changes and integration of changes into the clinical environment.
7. Accountable for identification and resolution of user needs and issues. Coordinates the development of multi-disciplinary user input processes regarding clinical systems and processes. Evaluates methods of user input and communication to the Nursing Informatics group, and from Nursing Informatics to users.
8. Develops proactive user support in all areas for clinical information system users.
9. Responsible for maintaining open communication among clinical user groups to determine issues or problem areas and facilitates resolution. Facilitates communication among users, physicians, IT, nursing and other clinical services as related to clinical information systems.
10. Conducts systems analysis and research related to clinical information systems. Works with members of the user groups to determine selection criteria. Evaluates selection processes and suggests improvements to those processes.
11. Works collaboratively with IT and Nursing Informatics staff to develop and maintain tracking systems for the tracking of required fixes, enhancements and testing.
12. Responsible for accurately and promptly analyzing the impact of information technology in clinical work processes. Communicates issues/topics with team members, Nursing and IT management.
13. Collaborates with outside consultants, vendors and company representatives in the planning, development, testing, revision and maintenance of clinical information systems.
14. Provides for and evaluates computer training and orientation activities for current and new personnel, students and faculty.
15. Maintains security, confidentiality and integrity of employee, patient, family and other medical information.
16. Demonstrates that patient, visitor and employee safety is a key and fundamental principle.
17. Maintains membership on or consultation to appropriate committees, work groups or task forces as needed to facilitate the ongoing process of the design, implementation and revision of automated and manual components of the clinical information systems.
18. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of:
a. Current trends and issues in healthcare, nursing practice, healthcare informatics and JCAHO Standards.
b. Policies and procedures as related to clinical practices and legal implications of clinical information systems.
c. Clinical applications currently in use and their relationship to other information systems.
19. Actively participates in presentations and publications about clinical information systems at conferences and in journals. Attends conferences and seminars as appropriate.
20. Maintains membership in organizations that enhance professional growth.
21. Provides leadership and role modeling in the areas of professionalism, accountability and communication within the Division of Nursing and Nursing Informatics.
22 Develops relationships and partnerships with local universities to foster an academic/medical center learning and teaching collaborative environment which supports evidenced based practice.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

Registered Nurse with a current California license.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Doctoral preparation preferred
2. Master's Degree required
3. Three years experience in clinical nursing
4. Three years experience in IT/Informatics with technical and clinical components of clinical information systems.
5. Two years management experience.
6. Must have experience leading the implementation of electronic nursing documentation in the inpatient arena, as an employee of a hospital.
7. Nursing Informatics degree a plus, but not required.
8. Nursing Informatics certification a plus, but not required.
9. POE experience is desirable.
10. Knowledge of the nursing process and methods highly desired.
11. Current working knowledge of IDX LastWord highly desired.
12. Strong computer skills required.
13. Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, with excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills.
