Clinical Innovation Leader for Nursing

To accelerate the benefit available from our deployment of an electronic medical record and the availability of computable clinical information, and to provide resources for the Kaiser Permanente Sidney R. Garfield Centers for Health Care Innovation, we are building a new team focused on identifying and assessing emerging clinical IT innovation.

This important work cannot be done in isolation from the business of care delivery. To ensure that we are evaluating and selecting key emerging technologies that work for our care providers and fit within the integrated system of Kaiser Permanente, we are recruiting a KP nurse to join KPIT's Innovation and Advanced Technology Team as a "Clinical Innovation Leader for Nursing" (also referred to as the "Innovation Nurse.") The open position is a fulltime commitment funded by KPIT.

The role of this nurse will be to assist with the identification, evaluation, and assessment of new care delivery technology, developing recommendations on the impact of integration with existing workflows and systems. The "Clinical Innovation Leader for Nursing" will help shape the vision for and selection of new technologies for evaluation. Promising new technology that is identified and screened by the Innovation team will be tested in the Garfield Center and may also be tested in live clinical environments. The "Innovation Nurse" will be involved in the development of appropriate experiments for the Garfield Center, providing leadership and expert consultation on the design, development, and implementation of experimental testing of new technologies. He/she will also assist with communication of the results of the experiments and provide thought leadership for subsequent live pilots.

As an experienced clinician, the "Innovation Nurse" will be uniquely positioned to truly understand the value that a particular technology can bring to the advancement of the quality of care in our organization. The "Innovation Nurse" will be providing a much needed service to the entire organization in assessing new software, hardware, and technologies.

Qualities and Requirements:

We are seeking a nurse interested and excited by new technology with experience in surgery, a medical subspecialty, or primary care. The
"Innovation Nurse" will also coordinate examination of new medical technology in areas beyond his/her immediate area of expertise, working with other nurses and members of the Innovation team.

The nurse selected will work with and report to the Director of Innovation and Advanced Technology. The successful candidate will also work closely with Patient Care Services in assessing current and future technology needs.

Relocation to Northern California is not necessary and this work can be done primarily by telecommuting. Occasional travel may be required.

The "Innovation Nurse" will work in collaboration with all members of the Innovation team as well as staff from the Garfield Center, IT, BioMed, Patient Care Services, and the New Product Council and outside vendors. Excellent interpersonal skills are required.

The "Innovation Nurse" will be involved in identifying emerging technology as well as developing experimental methodologies to test the technology in the Garfield Center. The "Innovation Nurse" will also oversee regional pilots at live medical test sites. Strong project management and the ability to conceptualize new ideas as well as to work and motivate teams required.

The "Innovation Nurse" will provide leadership in the development and dissemination across national and regional departments of the findings of the Innovation and Advanced Technology Group. The ?Innovation Nurse? will establish effective working relationships with peers both internal and external to KP. Strong written and verbal communication skills required.

3-5 years experience designing, evaluating, and /or modifying a variety of current nursing clinical systems using multiple software programs and network applications to integrate clinical and computer systems to produce delivery models and/or improved processes, performing benefit cost analysis and evaluating applicable nursing clinical programs is required.

Nurses with experience in examining new technology for Kaiser either through a regional group, the New Product Council, or other KP bodies are particularly encouraged to apply for this position.

The nurse selected for this position will be a thought leader in their field. We will also rely on their thought leadership to optimize, leverage, and extend the capabilities of KP HealthConnect. Experience with the use of KP HealthConnect is strongly preferred.

RN licensure required. In addition to at least 3 years of experience in nursing at Kaiser, a Master?s degree in nursing is required. Background and training in medical informatics desired. Experience and connections with national nursing organizations and policy committees a plus.
Ability to work collaboratively in a labor management partnership required.
