Position Title: Nurse Informaticist

Workweek: 8-5 M-F

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Director of Clinical Systems, Office of Clinical Informatics and secondary report to Administrator, Department of Medicine.

Directly Supervises: None

POSITION PURPOSE

This position, in the Office of Clinical Informatics will provide support to optimize the use of Epic in the Department of Medicine clinics through development of tools, refinement of workflows in Epic, and offering Epic support to the clinics. This individual will work closely with physicians, nurse managers and staff to maximize efficient and effective use of Epic as it relates to patient care, user satisfaction, clinical productivity and quality outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1. Attain and maintain knowledge about Department of Medicine practices, procedures, workflows, including cross training between EpicCare applications where appropriate to enhance clinical care.
2. Work with Department of Medicine clinic leaders to establish best practices to modify and improve EpicCare. Visit clinics regularly to identify areas for system build and workflow improvements that can be quickly and accurately identified, prioritized, and implemented.
3. Develop and maintain tools that provide optimal user efficiency and proficiency, with particular emphasis on development of tools to assist physicians in documentation and ordering within EpicCare. Audit and review new tools and processes that have been implemented.
4. Observe and assess user skills, coach individuals and offer individual or clinic meetings to share tips and tricks to enhance user proficiency. Available to physician and staff for quick answers to questions.
5. Provide recommendations, observations to clinic and Department of Medicine leadership regarding strategies to improve user satisfaction and increase efficiencies.
6. Department of Medicine clinics liaison to EpicCare and Cadence application support coordinators, and liaison to Froedtert/MCW EpicCare team and IT team.
7. Work on-site at clinics when new functionality in EpicCare is introduced.
8. Periodically assess workflows, user proficiency and system tools.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

• Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis Education: Bachelor Degree in Nursing. A degree in Informatics is preferred but not required.
• Experience: Five to eight years of clinical experience in an ambulatory setting is strongly preferred.
• Clinic management or experience in workflow, electronic medical record systems (EpicCare) and computer analyst experience strongly desired.
• Certifications/Licenses: Wisconsin RN

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

• Initiative, problem identification, resolution and analytical skills are essential.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, including the ability to coach, teach clinic staff and physicians.
• Strong critical thinking and the ability to apply knowledge at an enterprise level within a complex academic medical center are essential.
• An understanding of clinical flows and basic Health Information Management (HIM) processes is desired.
• Previous experience with Medical College of Wisconsin clinics and practices is preferred.
• Scheduling flexibility is required to accommodate changing business needs.
