Corporate Informatics Nurse Educator

DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

Responsible for planning, coordinating and facilitating education for all computer applications and computer software for all user groups to include staff, physicians, students and other workforce members at Stanly Memorial Hospital and as directed, for Stanly Health Services. Develops and trains all user groups on clinical computer applications and on-line documentation processes.

EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Required:
  • Incumbent must possess a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
  • Must have current clinical experience and competence with personal computers.
  • Must have a detailed understanding and working knowledge of current clinical information systems.
  • Demonstrates intermediate to advanced experience with computer software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Preferred:
  • Advanced degree or certification in informatics. Experience or formal training in adult education.
  • Good working knowledge of computer applications and the operation of audio-visual equipment.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Three years of clinical experience required.
  • Prefer incumbent to be currently working in a health care field.
  • Experience with personal computers for 2-3 years.
  • Working knowledge of network systems.
  • Documented experience in training or leading adult education in formal or informal setting.
OTHER:
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Visual and auditory acuity.
  • Demonstrates creativity and self-directive manner.
  • Can work independently with minimal supervision. Able to work effectively as a team member and team leader.
  • Able to integrate goals, mission, and vision of organization into educational programs.
  • Ability to independently research, develop, critique and provide educational offerings.
  • Professional interpersonal skills.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Supervises:

Assists in assigning, checking, and instructing staff.

Organization Interaction:

Provides input to management regarding educational needs of end-users, individually or collectively.

Reports To:

Director, Corporate Education and Customer Services
Professionally Accountable to the Managers and Director Information Systems & V.P. of Diagnostics.

COMMUNICATIONS:
  • Requires continual communication and coordination with Clinical Support Analyst and the Information Systems Department.
  • Requires frequent communications with department personnel and department heads to include but is not limited to development, training, implementation, staff progress, support and remediation needs.
  • Communicates efficiently by e-mail and fax.
  • Requires dialogue with other entities in the organization, clinics, physicians, and students regarding computer training needs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Job involves sitting for extended periods of time at a computer.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching.
  • Frequently lifts and carries light to moderate heavy objects.
  • Requires consistent use of motor skills and visual effort.
  • May stand and speak for long periods of time during educational classes.
WORKING HOURS AND OVERTIME STATUS:
  • Works 40 hours per week.
  • Must remain flexible with schedule to meet the needs of clinical staff on various shifts.
  • Classified as exempt for purposes of overtime.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • Classroom, departmental, and office settings with temperature controlled environment.
  • Requires travel to other locations within Stanly Health Services.
TECHNICAL PROFICIENCES AND WORK AIDS:
  • Computer applications appropriate to clinical areas.
  • Microsoft Office Suite, Fax.
  • Office Aids: Computer, Copier, Printer, Telephone, Laminator.
  • Classroom Aids: Overhead projector, Slide projector, LCD, Projector screens, Laptop and some Medical Equipment.
  • Reference Materials: Manuals, Books, Videos, etc.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conducts and facilitates clinical computer applications training and non-clinical computer training for all staff.
  • Provides computer orientation training and information system updates for current and on-going personnel, physicians, and others as directed.
  • Assesses, plans, develops and implements educational programs for staff based on an annual needs survey, new computer applications, system updates, and other organizational goals and changes.
  • Assesses, plans, develops, implements and evaluates employee and departmental educational needs regarding computer application corporate-wide.
  • Maintains a detailed understanding and working knowledge of the current information systems within the enterprise.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of trends and advances in their clinical field and in health care informatics, as well as new developments in hardware and software technology.
  • Collaborates with Information Systems, the Clinical Support Analyst, as well as management in the planning, development, testing, and implementation of clinical computer applications and other information systems.
  • Participates in planning related to future direction of information systems that involve end-user and end-user feedback.
  • Participates on the Management of Information committee. Participates in assigned functional team(s) and committees as directed.
  • Assists managers in establishing educational goals and plans regarding clinical or business computer applications for the department, for a specific group of employees, or a single employee with educational needs.
  • Utilizes adult education principles and creative teaching strategies in developing content.
  • Maintains employees’ educational attendance records through the electronic tracking system.
  • Accountable for maintaining the order and security of the computer room. Coordinates the use of the computer room with other departments and entities.
  • Assists in scheduling activities and events in the Facility Master for the purpose of hospital education and activities.
  • Assists in Corporate Education Department responsibilities including but not limited to the planning, development, and implementation of mandatory education, patient education, physician education, and other education opportunities appropriate to experience and expertise.
  • Networks with other educators within the region or state, and/or nation.
  • Provides for on-going maintenance, servicing, and control of departmental equipment such as laptop, LCD, laminator, and other supplies.
  • Inventories and maintains AHA equipment maintained by the department.
  • Promotes the values, goals and objectives of the department and hospital.
  • Maintains current awareness and understanding of SHS, corporate compliance program, policies and procedures and complies therewith.
  • Attends annual compliance training sessions, assists in auditing and monitoring functions when required and reports suspected violations of the compliance program.
  • Communicates new or updated rules and regulations to appropriate employees as needed.
  • Serves as a change agent in the organization through the delivery of new ideas, through leading projects and teams, and by acting as a role model in order to build a culture of excellence within SHS.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
