Primary Duties

Provides leadership and direction in the planning and administration of information technology projects that impact clinical departments. In collaboration with IT management, the position is responsible for coordinating aspects of the planning, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical information systems. The position will direct the design of appropriate user training, actively participate in change management process, and works collaboratively with others to identify opportunities for work process improvement. The nursing informatics specialist draws on his/her broad clinical expertise and informatics knowledge to determine clinical functions that are suitable for computer application and to ensure that Information Systems are consistent with professional standards of clinical practice.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Provide expert leadership for the development and use of clinical information systems
· Advocate for staff and management in the design and implementation of MEDITECH and other clinical technology
· Assist clinicians to use information so as to improve patient care and outcomes through training and other avenues
· Serves as a change agent providing those impacted by the change with the understanding of why we are doing it, the benefits of the change and the added value for the individuals impacted by the project
o Creates awareness of the project and impending change
o Provides opportunities for those impacted by change to participate in the process
o Develop and execute an appropriate communication plan and activities
· In collaboration with IT, develops and maintains a quality improvement program for clinical information systems. Monitors, reports and collaborates with other departments to identify areas for improvement and efficiency.
· Identifies educational needs of the clinical system end user and working in collaboration with Nursing Education, creates training plans/programs that address those needs.
· Acts as a liaison with medical staff to assess their needs and provide information and training as needed
· Collaborates with IT in the development of policies and procedures related to clinical applications
· Identifies and manages risk and quality assurance issues that arise during a project
· Lead and participate in committees and teams to optimize the utility of clinical information systems
· Provide mechanisms for soliciting on-going feedback from clinical users. Responds and follows up with staff concerns in a timely manner
· Communicates complex concepts and issues effectively (written and oral) across all levels within the organization. Facilitates problem solving within and between departments
· Participates with IT in the development, monitoring and management of clinical department implementation work plans
· Serves as a resource to the VP/CNO for management of information within the Department of Nursing
· Participates in planning related to future direction of the CIS & related efforts

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Current Massachusetts state nursing licensure.
2. BSN or related health care bachelors degree required, Masters degree preferred.
3. Previous Management experience required.
4. Strong understanding of the tenets of nursing informatics
5. Experience with the implementation and support of clinical IT projects
6. Demonstrated ability to be self directed with excellent organizational, analytical, writing, interpersonal and project related skills.
