Several Michigan health care providers have launched telemedicine programs, as advocates lobby
for changes to Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rules and push private insurance providers to offer coverage. From

Jackson-based Great Lakes Home Health Services Inc., which provides
services to patients in an 29-county area spanning mid-Michigan, recently spent $300,000 to buy the technology for its
new telemedicine program, chief operating officer and co-founder Cheri Lyn Deary said. The company is among three home
health care providers in the state with the service, she said.

Great Lakes Home Health has 45 monitoring units to use in patients’ homes to allow nurses to conduct virtual
check-ups as often as four times a day, seven days a week. The equipment is similar to monitors patients might be
connected to while hospitalized. “It’s the same type of thing only we’re watching it back in the office instead of in
the hospital,” she said.
