[telemedicine] HHS Releases Report on Advancing Medical Innovation

Recommendations from*Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS)*Thompson on how
the HHS can advance medical innovation are detailed in a new report “Moving Medical Innovations Forward—New
Initiatives from HHS”. The report was the result of an HHS task force formed by Secretary*Thompson last May
to weigh new ideas and promote new solutions to encourage innovation in healthcare. Some of the report’s
recommendations:



HHS should enter into new or an expanded Memoranda of Understanding to improve cooperation with other federal
agencies that play an important role in medical technology development.



HHS should create a forum to serve as a sounding board for investigators and manufacturers to communicate
with HHS agencies.



There should be support for the ongoing development of standard formats for electronic clinical trial data
enabling the use of consistent standards for clinical trials plus integrate the data with electronic health
records.
