Post [medinformatics] Iowa Medical Society Drops Objections to Drug Tracking Legislation

A*bill that would allow state regulators to monitor narcotics prescribed to Iowa patients
stands an improved chance of moving through the Iowa Legislature after the Iowa
Medical Society dropped its objection. Specifically, the bill would allow the
Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners to establish a computer database to track
prescriptions to help stem abuse of prescription painkillers.

According to the Des Moines Register, Iowa received a $350,000 federal grant last year to set up the
system, which would cost about $100,000 annually to operate.
