[medinformatics] Canada Health Council Cites Staffing Shortages and Anemic IT Efforts

The Health Council of Canada recommends that the
country move quickly to address a serious shortage of health-care workers and establish national electronic patient
records. In its inaugural report, Healthcare Renewal in Canada: Accelerating Change, the council addressed
the need to get the health sector up to speed with the high-tech revolution.* The council said it would host a
Health Human Resources Summit in Toronto in June to spur progress on a national plan to deal with staffing shortages.


Quoted in the Toronto Star’s coverage, Prime Minister Paul Martin said: “It’s why my first priority after
the election was to call for the federal-provincial conference on health. And it is why the federal government has
committed to $41 billion over the course of the next 10 years. Electronic patient records will pay huge dividends.
They’ll help deliver timely access and care.”
