[medinformatics] Electronic Alerts Decrease DVT Events in Hospitalized Patients

According to a study published in a recent issue of the New England Journal of
Medicine, a computerized physician-alert system lowered the incidence of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary
embolism among hospitalized patients by about 41 percent. A computer program identified patients at risk for embolism
and then encouraged providers to order prophylactic treatment to help prevent clot formation. The study involved 2,506
randomly selected patients and was conducted at Brigham and Women’s
Hospital in Boston.
