This week the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review featured a Web site hosted by the
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The site,
HealthTrak,
is a secure Internet portal that lets diabetic patients
communicate with their doctors from anywhere in the world. The site was launched in the fall of 2003 with 200
patients* linked to the system. Today, there are more than 1,000.*

The electronic health database keeps patients connected with physicians and support staff, including a diabetic
educator, as well as their own medical records.


Sometimes patients say it best.*”It’s nice to have the connection. I can access the portal from a remote
location. I actually can e-mail my doctor with questions when I can’t make phone calls while at the office. It allows
them to respond when they have the time during their day,” said a patient quoted in the article.
