Post [medinformatics] Computer Modeling May Help Assess Response to Breast Cancer Treatments

A new study being conducted by doctors in the U.K. will use computer modeling technologies to
hopefully improve breast cancer treatment by predicting individual patients’ responses to therapy.

The accuracy of Optimata Ltd.’s Virtual Cancer Patient (VCP) software,
which uses biomathematics-based modeling to assess and predict how cancer patients will react to treatments such as
chemotherapy, will be evaluated by the study.

Medical data on 48 breast cancer patients treated at the Nottingham City
Hospital Trust will be collected. Optimata, an Israel-based company specializing in biosimulation technology for
optimizing drug treatment protocols, will process the information using VCP. The study is slated to run until June
2005 and will evaluate how accurate the modeling technology is in predicting the sample patients’ progress and
reaction to treatments.

If successful, a proposed second-stage of the study will evaluate the efficiency of the technology by comparing
the progress of patients whose treatment was prescribed by standard protocols, versus patients who receive treatment
based on VCP recommendations.

Optima’s press release regarding the study can be accessed
here.
