[telemedicine] Insurance Stakeholders Back Georgia Telemedicine Network

Through an arrangement brokered by Georgia State Insurance Commissioner
John Oxendine’s office, Georgia has become the first state to attempt a
statewide telemedicine network connecting*rural hospitals to specialists in Atlanta.


According to the Atlanta Busninss Chronicle,*the first two hospitals,
Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele and
Memorial Hospital and Manor in Bainbridge, launched programs linking them to
Piedmont Hospital and Emory University’s
Crawford Long Hospital. More hospitals are expected to join the network.


The*network was launched between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia
Inc. and the state Department of Insurance. The program includes an $11.5 million, three-year grant by Blue Cross
and Blue Shield to fund the equipment and staff in the rural hospitals. The insurance company estimates an additional
$5 million annually in claims will be paid through telemedicine.*
