Research reported in the June 2005 issue of the Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy (JMCP) found*that there was no difference between traditional prescribers and those healthcare professionals who opt to e-prescribe in regard to formulary compliance and generic drug use. The researchers analyzed 110,975 administrative pharmacy claims for 12 months for 95 predominant e-prescribing physicians and 95 traditional prescribers in an ambulatory care setting. Formulary compliance was 83.2% for predominant e-prescribers versus 82.8% for traditional prescribers and 82.0% for the overall prescriber population. The ratio of generic drug use was 37.3% for predominant e-prescribers versus 36.9% for traditional prescribers. A relevant editorial asks the question, "Why e-prescribe?" in reference to an article in the May 2005 issue. That article reported that e-prescribing combined with
clinical decision support achieved significant drug cost savings and reduction in certain high-cost drugs.PDF of research article available here.ReadPermalink*|*Email this*|*Linking*Blogs*|*Comments
