*At Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce, Michigan first-time parents no longer receive parenting instructions from a nurse. Instead, instructions are displayed on a flat-screen monitor mounted over their hospital bed—in much the same way that TVs are traditionally mounted. The device can also link patients to the Web, call up X-rays and other medical data and stream in a host of customized videos and tip sheets. As patients increasingly expect the same high-tech tools they are used to at home to be available to them during a hospital stay, health systems nationwide are wiring up their wards. The hospitals also benefits however with increased efficiency. With systems like the one at Huron Valley, doctors can have immediate bedside access to patient information--and, nurses save time because they don't have to go over as much information with patients. That is a real bonus in this time of a critical national nursing shortage.*ReadPermalink*|*Email this*|*Linking*Blogs*|*Comments
