The Senate recently passed a bill promoting health care information technology. This technology will prevent medical errors and reduce costs, reports CQ Today.* This is news worthy of celebration, as it will drastically,* "cut waste and inefficiency out of our health care systems," says Senate Majority leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.). This promotion could reduce costs by $140 billion annually. This bill authorizes into statute the Office of the National Coordinator to award grants to hospitals, group physicians and other health providers, to increase the use of health information technologies. The bill will also clarify privacy rules which apply to electronically stored and transferred health information.
