Twenty-five years ago, health care information technology was dramatically different from what it is today. Twenty-five years from now, it promises to be worlds away from what it is today. How good a job has nursing done at keeping up with this exponential change? This article addresses the evolution of technology in health care and nursing's track record of technology expertise. It also discusses the price nursing will pay if it does not keep up with technology and the benefits it can gain if it does.

Re: Need to know: essential survival skills for the information age.

Technology in the field of health care has drastically transformed over the years. Now it is becoming more common everywhere in hospitals and doctors offices. Systems such as the semi-new EHR are bound to stay, and hopefully nursing will keep up with it. If not, things could potentially backwash, going back to traditional ways such as paper charting. It is important that nursing stays up to beat with health care information technology so that things can further advance for the better into the future. There could be so many benefits to this, such as even quicker patient information processing and data collection and analysis. Hopefully things will stay up to pace for a brighter and better future in nursing informatics.
