Recommended education for Nursing Informatics Career

Hi,

I'm about to become an RN. I have several years of software development (unrelated to nursing) experience.

My goal is to get into Nursing Informatics, but I'm not sure what type of education I should pursue. Is there anything like a "Nursing Informatics" degree? Are there any courses that would be particularly useful for a career in Nursing Informatics?

Yes. There are quite a few "nursing informatics" degree programs out there. We have many programs listed in our Nursing Informatics Eduction section in our Links Library. Also, you may be interested in the ANCC's Informatics Nurse Certification Exam.

You also may want to look into some of the Nursing Informatics Professional Organizations and Special Interest Groups.

Finally, you may want to have a look at our Informatics Jobs section as it should give you an idea regarding what types of nursing informatics and healthcare informatics jobs are out there.

I am a Nursing Informatics Specialist. I congratulate you on your nursing degree. However, the worth of an Informatics Nurse Specialist is in the clinical realm.
Having clinical experience is primary to the computer and technical skills that you already possess.
I would suggest that you get involved in Medsurg nursing as a staff nurse for a while. You will learn about the life of nurse and the documentation and poin t of care evidenced based nursing you will need. Become involved in any electronic endeavor at the hospital where you will work.

I have been an RN close to 28 years and became involved in nursing Informatics about 10 years ago. My clinical skills have been invaluable as you can teach anyone the technical side.

Also belong to the many informatic nurse organizations.
There are many informatics degrees around.
