| Cerner and Univ. of Maryland School of Nursing Partner University of Maryland School of Nursing and Cerner Partner to Bring Healthcare Information Technology to Nursing Students Partnership will bolster students' skills and offer innovation for nursing education KANSAS CITY, Mo. and BALTIMORE, Md. - April 24, 2006 - The University of Maryland School of Nursing and Cerner, in cooperation with the University of Maryland Medical Center, have announced an agreement that will bring the latest advances in healthcare information technology (IT) directly into the hands of future nurses. Cerner, the nation's leading provider of healthcare IT, will provide clinical software the School of Nursing's state-of-the-art clinical simulation laboratories, offering students at one of nation's top 10 nursing schools an unparalleled educational experience in an era of electronic health records. "The University of Maryland School of Nursing is committed to innovative teaching and the use of the most current technology," says Janet D. Allan, PhD, RN, CS, FAAN, dean of the School of Nursing. "This collaboration will better prepare the future generation of nurses for a workplace that is increasingly automated." The Institute of Medicine's "Crossing the Quality Chasm" report calls for the infusion of health IT into today's healthcare curricula, reasoning that IT tools are essential to safe, high quality care in today's complex clinical environments, and those who know how to use them will have an advantage, both personally and competitively. With Cerner information systems in the School's simulation laboratories, students will experience realistic clinical scenarios and have tools to integrate evidence-based clinical practices, critical thinking, and data-driven decision making into patient care processes, all in a safe learning environment. Critical thinking and advanced problem solving are crucial to high quality patient care. With the addition of Cerner's solutions, University of Maryland's nursing students will have another tool to use in working through patient assessments, care planning, documentation of patient information and monitoring outcomes as they would in a real-world setting. For more than a decade, Cerner and the University of Maryland Medical System have partnered to increase safety and decrease costs of healthcare delivery with inpatient electronic health record clinical solutions. This collaborative partnership allows for these same clinical solutions to be extended into the School of Nursing's curriculum and teaching approach. "Bringing Cerner's solutions into the traditional and virtual classroom and simulation laboratories allows the University of Maryland's nursing students an advantage as they prepare for their careers," said (Charlotte A Weaver, PhD, RN, Chief Nurse Officer, Cerner Corporation). "The ability to respond to patient scenarios in an interactive, electronic environment helps these future nurses hone the skills vital to their success and to their patients' overall well being." The program will also support the University's nursing faculty by enabling the development of data-driven teaching cases and interactive tools. Faculty will be able to view students' on-line entries to review, comment upon and measure students' work from anywhere at anytime. "By leveraging Cerner's solutions as a recruiting advantage, the University will continue to attract and retain top talent as students and faculty," said Judy Ozbolt, PhD, RN, FAAN, program director for the School of Nursing's master of science in nursing informatics. "As our graduates enter the workforce proficient at using IT to enhance their clinical skills, their excellence will attract others to our educational programs. As we demonstrate how to realize the full potential of IT to improve care, more nurses will want to pursue graduate study in nursing informatics so they can lead progress in this field," By selecting Cerner, the University of Maryland chose a supplier with strength in academic settings. Cerner has partnerships with more than 50 academic client facilities and nearly 75 teaching hospitals around the country, providing the technology for an innovative classroom experience and a well-trained healthcare workforce. Founded in 1889, the University of Maryland School of Nursing is one of the leading research institutions in the nation. Consistently ranked among the top 10 schools of nursing in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, the School enrolls over 1,400 students in its baccalaureate, master's, doctoral and continuing education programs. The School emphasizes the integration of research, teaching and clinical practice, and serves regional, national and international audiences.
