Exploring Barriers to Nurse Mobility
January 3, 2005 - Nurses are the primary caregivers in provider organizations but often unappreciated in many ways, contends Gregg Malkary, managing director of Spyglass Consulting, Menlo Park, Calif.
"Nurses are looked upon as the largest line item on the balance sheet--they aren't the revenue generators, so administrators see nurses as a huge money pit," he says.
That's why it is important to show how information technology--particularly mobile computing--can cut nursing costs and justify investments in nursing I.T., Malkary believes. His firm in 2004 completed a study of mobile computing use among nurses. He will present results and other insights during an educational session at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's Annual Conference and Exhibition, Feb. 13-17 in Dallas.
