Another 'Want more information on how to enter field'

I've been an RN for five years and would like to get away from bed-side nursing (I'm just too old for that). I'm just starting to research this "Nursing Informatics" field but from what I've read so far it sounds very interesting. I'd like to know some basic things like - What's a day on the job of an informatics person look like? How much money can you expect to make? What are the basic education requirements to get started?

Re: Another "Want more information on how to enter field"

I'm no expert on how to get in and am looking at the field as a career option myself (have a strong technology background and am just getting my RN this fall) , but one idea I have is if you work for a hospital, you might contact the Information Systems dept if and see if there are looking to employ nurses in a requirements analysis type positions?

Re: Another "Want more information on how to enter field"

Hello! I've been a RN for 12 yrs and can relate to the "too old" comment! I'm, in fact, a 'crispy critter' in bedside nursing and would like to move on, move over, move forward with experience in a wide variety of nursing and a BSN in hand...how do I start a career in informatics nursing? Feel free to email me with your experience and expert advice in this field and especially if you'd like me to work for you! :>)

Talking Re: Another "Want more information on how to enter field"

To get inot the field apply in your own facility for sclinical system analyst. This is the easiest way to get in. Talk with the IT department for possible entry level positions. Go also to web site american nursing informatics for more info.

I am trying to do the same! I am going to take a course for a certification in informatics, about 18 credits. When I find out more I'll let you know.

I have been a nurse for 30 years. I have worked in almost all areas. I love nursing. I find that many nurses have a fear of electronic equipment. My husband is a biomed tech, he has taught me a lot. I think they should require nursing classes to include more detailed computer classes. I went back to get my BSN in 1998 and the only thing I had to do is do some research and e-mail. I have taught myself more because I have not worked in the last 6 months. I love teaching and worked in the education department.
Make sure if anyone is going to get education online that it is an accredited
program.
